 Meditation posture: Transliteration of original Sanskrit Scripture :-

Sthira sukham asanam. /46/.  

Sthira = constant and continuous,  sukham = happiness , asanam = the posture of the meditation of yoga .

 Meditation posture: Translation:-

The posture of the meditation of yoga is in constant and continuous happiness. /46/ .


View point  46 :-.The posture of the meditation of yoga  brings constant and continuous happiness Constant and continuous happiness is held in the posture of meditation of yoga. The postures of meditation should embody steadiness and happiness.
 The posture of the meditation of yoga  is to be assumed during the practice of meditation must be constant and easy. It is of paramount importance that posture of the body as well as the posture of the mind especially during the practice of meditation of yoga  should be firm and pleasant. Such a posture of meditation of yoga should be conducive to calmness and ease and must be stable and comfortable. A body whose posture is constant is at ease. This easy-giving calmness is dealt within the third limb of the posture of yoga. The cultivation disciplining and perfection of the limb of posture, necessitates the undertaking of the practice of making the posture of the body constant and firm. The posture of the human body is such that it is always either in a state of distress or in motion. A disciple who has not tasted the taste of a constant and easy posture, regards the distress free body as having a constant and easeful posture. 

The meditation of yoga, however, says that there is a great difference between the two. The posture of a distress free body is non-constant. On the other hand, the posture of a body at ease is constant. The body at ease whose each and every pore is non-constant, tantamount to having an uneasy posture. This is because in the posture of a distress free body, the pores of all the external and internal sense of perception and thinking and sense organs of action, are not constant. As such, this distress free bodily posture after sometime automatically gets converted into the distressful bodily posture. The result is that such a posture becomes unbearable in the meditation of yoga. 

The individual in the unbearable bodily posture does not remain focused in the  conscious mind. It keeps on coming back to the discomfort and distress of the bodily posture. Hence, in the distressful bodily posture, it is not possible to undertake the meditation of  yoga discipline. It is not possible to descend into the conscious mind and keep the individual fixed and focused in the conscious mind itself. On the other hand, in an easeful posture of the body the pores of all the exterior and internal senses of organs of action and senses of thoughts become constant and stilled. They keep on remaining constant so long as the mind’s meditation desires. As such, meditation of the mind during an easeful bodily posture gets descended into and focused in the conscious mind for a much longer time. No obstacle is felt in the meditation of yoga of making the mind’s concentration descend into the conscious mind and keeping it focused on it.

The meditation of yoga says that in the practice of yoga, thoughts of mind are to be consciously restrained and nullified. Before undertaking the meditation of yoga of making the concentration of senses descend into the conscious mind, it is essential to cultivate the discipline of posture. For this, meditation of yoga has to be undertaken for making the posture of body constant and comfortable. When such a practice matures and becomes firmly grounded, it is then that a beginning is to be consciously made to restrain the thoughts of the mind. The shapes and forms and pores of all the bodies and senses of all the living beings which are made up of seminal fluid, bone marrow, bone, flesh, skin, nerves and blood, are different from each other. This is because they are meant for the enjoyment of different lingering past subliminal impressions. As such, each living being undergoes different experience by adopting a different posture, which is comfortable and constant for his body. It is in the constant and comfortable posture that the body becomes absolutely motionless like that of a non-rolling and stationary stone. The body becomes so constant and so motionless that even the presence of mosquitoes or a fly on any limb of the body is not felt. The body virtually becomes consciously frozen in the posture of  the meditation of yoga.

The truth is that the very existence of the body is not felt during concentration of senses when the body is in a state of perfect posture of the meditation of yoga. The very existence of the body is not even experienced in the perfect posture of the meditation of yoga. The disciple feels absolutely light and without weight in perfect posture of the meditation of yoga. The tension in the body is also experienced as considerably reduced in the correct meditation posture. The body appears weightless in the perfect posture of the meditation of yoga. In a comfortable constant posture of the meditation of yoga, the spinal cord, the neck and the head are kept in a straight line while sitting or standing. A comfortable and constant posture is like the conscious sleeping body. In such a posture, all movements except breathing, get stopped. Even the movement of the flow of blood also gets de-accelerated in the perfect posture of the meditation of yoga. In the deep state of meditation of yoga, the movement of breathing also stops in right posture. In a comfortable constant posture, the movement of breathing gets de-accelerated.

The meditation of yoga says that the practice of the discipline of constant and comfortable posture of the meditation of yoga is different from the ordinary meaning of the word of posture. In the disciplining of the limb of posture, no exercise needs to be undertaken. No muscles of the body are to be flexed or strengthened. No preparation is to be made vis-à-vis the limbs of the body. On the contrary, the practice of keeping the body fixed is to be undertaken consciously. It is another thing that a diseased body or a weak body or a body suffering from pain, cannot even enter a constant and comfortable posture. As such, before the commencement of the practice of  a comfortable and constant posture, the body is to be made healthy and disease free. For this, treatment of diseases or weakness should be undertaken. 

The yoga of posture is not a sure way to reduce bodily ailments. On the contrary, a diseased body cannot practice the yoga of posture. The posture of the body, which is comfortable, is conducive to stability. The posture of the body, which is conducive to stability, is comfortable. Thus a comfortable posture and a constant posture are inter-related. Presence of non-stability in the body or presence of pain in the body is an indication of the presence of diseases and weakness in the body. At the time of death the body breaks up before the mind does so. Comfortable death takes place only in a constant posture. The pain, which is felt at the time of death, is only due to a belief in the fear of death. The body dies only to cross beyond its unsteadiness and to cross beyond its pain.

 All the different bodies of different living beings, as created by  subtlest nature essence , are an arrangement for the enjoyment of their particular lingering past subliminal impressions in a particular life full of comfort in ease posture. As such no living being wants to give up his body. No living being wants to die. Not with standing the type of living body as created by subtlest nature essence, it is always liked by the concentration of senses and organs of action of the body. The type of easy body posture appears as the supreme form of a living body to its possessor. The living being likes to live in its own easy form of body posture. The child in the mother’s womb lies in a comfortable and easy  posture of the meditation of yoga. This comfortable state constant and comfortable posture of the meditation of yoga can be read and gauged from the child’s happy and blissful countenance when he comes out of mother’s womb and enters the natural world .

 Having a completely constant and comfortable posture tantamount to the cultivation of the third limb of the yogic discipline of posture. One should find his easy and comfortable posture for meditation of yoga  consciously. In general, in comfortable constant posture, the spinal cord, the neck and the head are kept in a straight line while sitting or standing. But this posture may not suit many .In such condition , the disciple is to find his comfortable and constant posture that is like the conscious sleeping body. In such a posture, all movements except breathing, get stopped or reduced considerably itself.
