Insight vision on  yoga thesis on mantra  meditation 42 : -

One must understand verbal thought  of conceived mantra (vikalpaih ) Verbal thought  of conceived mantra  means hearing a sound of words, which does not have a corresponding reality. Knowledge about words, which do not have corresponding reality and are figments of imagination, constitute verbal thought of conceived mantra . Thinking about an object or a subject with the active assistance of knowledge of words  and with the help of a language leads to verbal thought of conceived mantra . Thinking about an object or a subject with words as per our imagination of forms and without regard to the solid basis of its thought constitute verbal thought of conceived mantra of  words. Imaginary thing  conveyed with the help of fraction of words or a language also leads to verbal thought of conceived mantra . When an object or a subject is not consciously and carefully heard, seen or read but conveyed through the imaginative pattern of words, the resultant knowledge is called verbal thought of conceived mantra . Knowledge about future is based on verbal thought of conceived mantra . When verbal thought of conceived mantra  arises in a state of unconscious and un-alertness it is called false thought of the wisdom of education with words. When verbal thought of conceived mantra  arises in a state of experience or concentration and alertness, it is called true thought with words. Such thought lessens grief, sorrows and distress.

What is direct experience of meditation mantra  with analytical thought (sa-vitarka) ? Direct experience of meditation mantra  with analytical thought  is the intelligence that resides in the brain  of the master of the meditation mantra. Direct experience of meditation mantra  with analytical thought contains information knowledge for the betterment of the thought of individualism . Direct experience of meditation mantra  with analytical thought is a knowledge based on information, seen or heard or read about external things . Direct experience of meditation mantra  with analytical thought comes in the domain of verbal thought, false thought or memory thought. Human being’s developed intelligence has acquired analytical thought or argumentative thought  from his parents, the society that he lives in and the religion that he believes in. His thought situation  that is outer layer of state of mind  has adopted this information blindly on hearing or on seeing or on reading about it. Today’s developed human being is not used to practice his personally experienced knowledge and generally live in argument thought of knowledge . Really he has also forgotten to have his direct perception.

The knowledge of the Verbal thought  of conceived mantra is based on specific meanings derived from words . It is a limited kind of knowledge which may have application in certain technological applications of analytical thought, but is an impediment when applied incessantly in the direct experience of meditation mantra unified.

In the direct experience of meditation mantra unified , the master of meditation mantra learn how to let go of the analytical thought toward various external  defined objects of attention uphold the duality . Such direct experience of meditation mantra unified interferes with the most subtle and beyond even the most subtle realms of consciousness which eventually must be pierced in yoga. So here the master of the meditation mantra must become conscious of the mistaken coarse fixations of verbal thought  of conceived mantra, how verbal thought  of conceived mantra arise and cease one after another, and how to release the process of the verbal thought  of conceived mantra. This is done at first simply by noticing the process of verbal thought  of conceived mantra as it arises. Later, one gains insight in the analytical thought, through the direct experience of meditation mantra unified .

The prefix, sa, means "with" . Vitarka means analytical thought. So savitarka means thought processes that are based on analytical thought . This will later be differentiated from nir-vitarka (devoid of analytical thought) and savicara (subtle thoughts based on internal objects of thought itself).

We start then with the analytical thought (vitarka). Then we work toward the more subtle (vicara) which are the awareness of the thought process itself as objects of attention. That too must be seen as a distraction eventually. When all analytical thought and subtle thought processes cease (nirvitarka and nirvicara) then and only then, can the clear light of the natural mind spontaneously arise. This statement is not a statement of faith or belief, but comes from he direct experience of meditation mantra unified.

Patanjali here is helping us to recognize that such  direct experience of meditation mantra unified distractions of savitarka occur at first. That is normal. With continued practice of direct experience of meditation mantra unified ,they will cease. For us to recognize this process of the direct experience of meditation mantra unified is still an attainment (a samapatti) because the master of the meditation mantra has no awareness of even this or even the inner workings of his/her own mental processes. Thus direct experience of meditation mantra unified is at first a retraining and reconditioning process where one starts to wake up to our way of seeing and being in the world -- how our innate knowledge  becomes dissolute upon objects  and we simply become objectified and fixated . Knowledge of the causes of distraction of analytical thought is not an end in itself. Rather it simply allows us to drop our dissolute ways as soon as master of meditation mantra become aware of them . With continued direct experience of meditation mantra unified these analytical thought tendencies  are recognized as they arise and thus the awareness itself no longer disappears with the momentum of the distracted thought, but rather the energy of that momentum is brought back to the source of the awareness.

Thus in meditation mantra before a concentrated is formed, before the mind wanders in thought, before a sentence is formed, before a word appears first, but as the process itself just begins arise, it is recognized and released into the vast ocean pure awareness. Beginning of masters of meditation mantra learn to watch the words arise, become aware of it arising, then no longer feed their arising. The resultant stillness and silence becomes naturally and increasingly more recognizable and constant. The words stop arising by themselves as masters of meditation mantra become more aware of the subtle energy behind their arising as masters of meditation mantra move more fully and naturally toward that great stillness and vast open space of pure awareness. Hence the ordinary dualistic mind stops revolving . This occurs eventually through direct experience of meditation mantra unified. The  conscience is merged with the universal mind, the Universal conscience -- it rests in the innate effulgence clear light stillness.

Another definition of vitarka is analytical thought being accompanied by names of physical objects, i.e., thus one can how our our absorption becomes disturbed and noisy by such analytical thought and as such as the processes dominate they keep on arising/coming forth producing an unsteady and wavering body/mind distraction. Thus one may temporarily experience some connection with Self, but it is fleeting, until one experiences nirvitarka (devoid of analytical thought).

Among the various Verbal thought  of conceived mantra, in human mind there exists a analytical thought in which there is an analyses of matter object mixed with words, spiritual knowledge and ideas. Such a Verbal thought  of conceived mantra has elements of fancy or confused notions relating to the words, the object denoted and the thought attained thereafter. An analytical thought of this type comprises analyses of the matter object through the medium of words, knowledge and ideas. The preceding website page 41 deals with a type of analytical thought in which there is verbal thought of word, meaning and knowledge. This part deals with the memory thought of the mind. It is called argumentative thought based on the analyses of matter objects in subconscious mind. The analytical thought is accompanied by conscience. Hence, it is also called a direct experience of meditation mantra unified in which there is an inter-mingling of confused notions relating to the words, the object denoted and the thought, which in turn leads to the annihilation of the mind. The  master of the meditation mantra’s mind remains in a state of perspective process because of the mind’s analytical activity in respect of words, object and cognitive ideas. It reflects that condition of the human mind in which the mind’s imaginative thought, verbal thought, false thought, argumentative thought and intellectual thought are literally interpreted and their meaning understood in a thought free and intellect free state. During this process, alertness about the presence of all these types of thought is, however, kept in mind.

In the argumentative thought, the mind concentrates on a subject or an object and becomes moving and unstable with flow of thought. On contemplation, however, the subject of the thought is felt and seen to be swimming and floating in the conscience . Thought of the subject of thought is, however, not correctly contemplated and attained. The result is that the thought of the subject matter of thought, which is attained, is impure spiritual knowledge. It is only a delusion of the pure spiritual knowledge about the subject matter of thought. During argumentative thought, mind is not able to get a correct perspective of the subject matter of contemplation. Thought that is attained by the master of the meditation mantra is a type of memory thought which is a mixture of pure and impure spiritual knowledge.

There is no doubt that the mind thus becomes stable and static on a subject or an object during direct experience of meditation mantra unified. At the same time, however, the mind remains in capable of separating the true and untrue meaning of the manifested form of the subject or object. Whatever it thinks, it is only a memory of the name or form or world or language of the subject of thought or object and its logic or reasoning. Whatever it thinks is a mixture of the argumentative thought regarding a particular subject or an object, which keep on racing through the mind’s argumentative thought. This is because there is confusion on account of discrepancies that exist between the words; it’s meaning and the knowledge of the word meaning.
